Mitsubishi Motors Philippines recently introduced
in the market the all new Mitsubishi Grandis. The all new Grandis
which is also the 4th generation Space Wagon, is considered a totally
new concept in automobile design. The Grandis was co-designed by Mitsubishi
Motors Corporation and Daimler Chrysler with the purpose of coming
up with a car which will provide space and comfort for 7 adults.
This sleekly styled 5-door MPV measures 4,765 mm in
length, 1,795 mm in width, and 1,655 mm in height. A generous application
of character lines on the hood and on the sides sets the Grandis apart
from those “Boxy” and slab sided MPVs and station wagons.
The front end features a striking three-diamond mark on the grille,
multi reflector quad-headlamps that provide a clear view of the road
during night time driving, and low-glare fog lamps that improve visibility
especially in poor weather conditions. Having a stance of a full size
passenger car complemented with large doors on the sides make getting
in and out of the Grandis as effortless as possible. While the tall,
clear lens tail lamps at the rear benefit from the wide use of 48
radiant LEDs at each side, provide excellent visibility for improved
safety.
Once inside the Grandis, the interior envelopes the
occupants in a luxurious, yet functional environment. The duo-tone
dash panel’s gentle wave design flows gently and melds smoothly
with the doors and ceiling, making one feel comfortable and surrounded
by a protective shield. With goals of maximizing driving ease and
enjoyment, the tilt-adjustable steering, gearshift, signal lever,
and cockpit environment controls have been ergonomically arranged.
“Numerous modifications and applications of sound insulation
panels in the Grandis have been made to significantly reduce road
shock and noise. This makes the Grandis one of the most quiet and
relaxing car to ride in.” said Froy Dytianquin, AVP for Marketing
Services. The Grandis offers convenience to all of its occupants by
having an auto-climate control plus rear vents for each seat, front
room with map lamps and personal lamps for the 2nd and 3rd rows, and
amazingly a total of 6 cupholders (2 for each row) 4 bottle holders
(1 for each passenger door) inside the cabin. Other thoughtful amenities
abound in the Grandis, such as the Mitsubishi Motors Audio Design
(MMAD) stereo single in-dash MP3/CD player with tuner and six hi-fi
speakers, Mitsubishi Motors Alarm (MMAS) and keyless entry system
with electronic key immobilizer and alarm, and reverse sensors.
Genuine leather seats and door trim inserts welcome
you as you step in the Grandis. All seven occupants will enjoy more
than ample legroom thanks to its cabin forward design. The interior
of the Grandis was designed to create a “modern living space”,
providing maximum relaxation and enjoyment for the driver and passengers
alike. The front seats have adjustable headrests, as well as slide
and recline functions so that occupants can sit however they choose.
They can be folded flat along with the second-row seats to create
a full-length bed.
The second and third row seats can be adjusted and
arranged for a wide variety of uses. The second-row seat squabs can
be set at three different angles for individual comfort, while 60:40-split
seats can be independently tipped up and folded all the way to maximize
cargo space, or reclined all the way back to create a sleeping space
or play area for children when the car is parked. The third-row 50:50-split
seats can be reclined, tilted backwards with the tailgate open for
use during rest stops, or folded up and stowed away under the floor,
creating a larger cargo space. The variety of possible seating arrangements
makes the Grandis perfect for carrying lots of passengers, hauling
large cargo loads, or creating a relaxing space to rest during long
trips. (PLEASE SEE PHOTO on SEATING POSSIBILITIES)
The Grandis breaks new grounds with its 2.4-liter
MIVEC(Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control
System) engine. A true performer, the 2.4-liter 4G69 MIVEC engine
optimizes output by enabling variable engine timing. At low ranges,
the MIVEC uses a low/medium cam profile that creates valve timing
with little overlap, maximizing fuel efficiency, torque, and low-end
pick-up while minimizing exhaust emissions. At high ranges (above
3,600 rpm), the MIVEC switches to a high cam profile that results
to valve timing with larger overlap. This overlap takes advantage
of air intake speeds to increase flow into the cylinder with each
cycle, thereby producing a maximum power of 165 PS at 6,000 rpm and
22.1 kg-m of torque at 4,000 rpm. The result is a quick and responsive
engine throughout the rev range.
Harnessing the power of this Grandis is the 4-speed
INVECS-II automatic transmission with Sportronic mode. INVECS-II stands
for Intelligent & Innovative Vehicle Electronic Control System
which uses two control programs. In Optimum Shift Control, the computer
monitors throttle position, vehicle speed, and braking, then from
its database of shifting patterns, it selects the ideal gear and shift
timing thereby avoiding an inappropriate gear selection such as when
climbing hills. In Adaptive Shift Control, the computer observes the
driver’s style and builds a data profile based on engine output,
tire load, and foot braking. The computer then adjusts gearshift timing
to suit the driver’s style. For enhanced driving pleasure, this
transmission is equipped with a Sportronic mode which allows the driver
to manually select “clutchless” gear changes by tilting
the lever to “+” for upshifts and “-“ for
downshifts.
The car-like ride of the Grandis can be attributed to the design of
its all-wheel independent suspension. The independent lay-out assures
quick response to the driver’s commands, even when road conditions
turn tricky, reducing understeer and improving cornering stability
when powering through turns. 5-spoke 16-inch wheels with 215/60 R16
low profile tires provides excellent grip on the road. Large 4-wheel
disc brakes, assisted by the 4-sensor, 3 channel ABS with Electronic
Brakeforce Distribution, takes out the drama during emergency evasive
braking maneuvers.
Also in the safety aspect, The Grandis uses Mtsubishi’s
proprietary RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body technology
which uses a straight frame rail design to efficiently and effectively
absorb and disperse collision energy. The use of composite materials
like the octagon-section front chassis members and pillar bracing
inside the body panels enhance the safety levels while reducing overall
weight. Front and rear crumple zones, meanwhile, bend and deform to
absorb impact energy before it can affect cabin space. Based on extensive
in-house testing, the Grandis has achieved a 4-star European Standard
rating for crashworthiness. Adding more safety into the Grandis, front
occupants are protected by a comprehensive dual SRS (Supplemental
Restraint System) airbags and pretensioners plus force limiters for
the front 3-point ELR seatbelts. The second row is equipped with two
3-point ELR/ALR (Automatic Locking Retractor for the Child safety
seat) seatbelts plus a center lapbelt. Lastly, the third row is equipped
with two 3-point ELR/ALR seatbelts.
Suggested retail price of the 2005 Grandis 2.4 MIVEC P 1,480,000.
