Mitsubishi Motors Philippines unveils officially the
2005 Montero Sport Easy Select 4WD as an additional model to reinforce
its current SUV line up. Mitsubishi’s strong heritage in SUVs
plus the experience it learns from the grueling Dakar rallies are
testimonies that the Montero Sport is one remarkable SUV.
The Montero Sport’s urban styling is a sharp
departure from the boxy styling of conventional 4x4s. Its muscular
presence and high ground clearance projects an image of rugged durability
yet the sleek profile hints at its passenger-car like performance.
Though large in dimensions, it still offers nimble handling and parking
maneuverability.
This Japan-built SUV, has a strong front end and burly
image, deriving its rightful heritage from the bigger Pajero. Multi-reflector
halogen headlamps and fog lamps offer excellent illumination while
the vertically slanting grill with chrome accent reinforces its sophisticated
urban look. The low floor height and cabin increases practicality
which delivers passenger-car like driving posture and access. And
at the same time, this lower stance also promises stability. Wide
over-fenders, like bulging muscles, suggests off-road prowess. At
the rear, functional equipments such as the spoiler with LED-type
third brake lamps and the rear wiper with washer add to its sporty
image. The crisp lines, bulging curves and low overall height create
a unique functional design that looks striking whether parked in your
garage, cruising the city, or carving the twisty back roads.
From the genuine leather seats to the intelligently
laid out switches and controls, the interior of the Montero Sport
exudes luxurious comfort from an SUV. Seats can be configured variably
to accommodate most hauling requirements. The Montero Sport’s
sportiness is enhanced by the white meter cluster, map lamps, two
room lamps, and overhead console boxes too name a few. Additional
valuable driving information is courtesy of its Multi-meter located
on the center of the dash displays the volt reading, compass, outside
temperature, and oil pressure. For hi-fi entertainment, the Montero
Sport has a 2-din Mitsubishi Motors Audio Design that can play MP3s,CDs,
and cassette, and complemented with 6 speakers. All-power amenities
reduce the stress while driving while the Mitsubishi Motor Alarm and
keyless entry system (MMAS) provides additional convenience and peace
of mind.
The Montero Sport’s heart is the 4M40 2800 cc
turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine which has a maximum output
of 125PS at 4,000 rpm and torque of 29.8 kg-m at 2,000 rpm. Aside
from being durable and dependable, this engine has been noted to be
quiet, responsive and economical. Transmission options for the Montero
Sport are a 4-speed Automatic with Electronic Lock-up Converter. For
the four wheel drive fun, the Montero Sport is equipped with the Easy
Select 4WD transfer case. The secret of this system is its synchronized
free-wheel front differential which lets the driver to switch from
2WD to high-range 4WD even at speeds up to 100 km/h – and back
at any speed with just a movement of the lever. The high-range 2WD
mode is ideal for economical and quiet driving while the high range
4WD is more suited for drivers who need the extra confidence in driving
through rain and other slippery surfaces. When maximum traction is
needed such as climbing steep slopes with loose surfaces, it is ideal
to use the low-range 4WD.
The smooth car-like ride of the Montero Sport can be credited to its
front double wishbones sprung by torsion bars and the rear’s
3-link suspension on coil springs. Both ends of the Montero Sport
are fitted with stabilizer bars to reduce body roll during cornering.
Anchoring this SUV to a quick stop are double piston caliper disc
brakes at the front and drum-in-disc brakes at the rear. Braking action
are always checked by its Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) which works
in tandem with the Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) that regulates
brake bias in the front and rear as load changes. 255/70 R16 tires
mounted on stylish aluminum 16-inch wheels ensures excellent grip
on the road.
The Montero Sport’s body was designed and built
to assure a high level of safety in the event of a collision. Passive
safety items include the leading and trailing areas of the ladder
frame chassis that are designed to crush progressively to absorb collision
impact. Deck and rear cross members effectively disperse collision
energy from side impacts to minimize injury to the occupants. Also
providing further protection are the side impact bars inside the door
shells. The fuel tank is also located within the ladder frame just
in front of the rear axle to prevent it from igniting during an impact.
Front occupants reduce the risk of being injured in a collision thanks
to its dual SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags and 3-point
ELR seatbelts. The second row is equipped with two 3-point seatbelts
plus a center lapbelt.
The Montero Sport is available in four colors: White,
Blue, Silver, and Black and Mitsubishi Motors Philippines will back
it up with a 3-year or 100,000 kilometer warranty.
Suggested retail price of the 2005 Montero Sport 4x4 Automatic is
