TRANSMISSION 101: Guide on How to Drive a Manual Transmission Vehicle

Driving a manual transmission vehicle offers a unique and engaging experience, providing more direct control over the car's power and performance.

The direct connection between the driver and the car creates a feeling of control, as every gear shift needs to be done with care and good timing.

Here is a basic guideline to operate your manual transmission vehicle:

Familiarize Yourself with the Controls

Gear Shift Knob – Used to select the appropriate gear.

① Clutch Pedal – Located on the far left, this pedal disengages and engages the engine from/to the transmission.

② Brake Pedal – Slows or stops the vehicle; situated between the clutch and accelerator.

③ Gas Pedal – Located on the far right, this pedal increases engine speed.

Get Ready to Move

Fully push the clutch down with your left foot for smooth shifting of gear and prevent early damage on clutch system and then put the car into 1st gear. Release the handbrake, if engaged.

Move off and Release the Clutch Pedal Slowly

Gently press the gas pedal with your right foot and slowly let go of the clutch with your left foot until the car starts moving.

Note: This procedure will help you to memorize the biting point of the clutch without damaging the clutch assembly.

Shifting Gears

After accelerating, press the clutch down, shift to the next gear (2nd gear), then slowly let go of the clutch while pressing the gas gently to maintain safe speed and the right RPM when shifting gears. Do the same when changing gears.

Stopping and Parking

To stop, let go of the gas and press the brake slowly. Before you stop completely, press the clutch down to avoid stalling the car. Do not forget to shift the gear to neutral.

To park, press down the clutch, move the gear to neutral, set the handbrake, and turn off the car.

💡 TIPS: How not to damage your clutch

1.     Do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle on a hill as it can prematurely wear and tear the assembly.

2.     Avoid riding the clutch or keeping the clutch pedal pressed down.

3.     Shift to neutral at stops.

4.     Shift gears smoothly and promptly without using excessive force.

5.     Practice good driving habits.
